Thundercrit On Sea - Eastbourne, UK

Fixed_Beers_Thundercrit_On_Sea.jpg

This year The North London Thundercats have a new race and it’s happening in Eastbourne. Aptly named Thundercrit On Sea, the race will take place on a new 1.6 km street circuit right next to the beach as part of the Eastbourne Cycling Festival.

There will be two races to enter on the day:

  • 20:00 – Women’s Elite Thunder Crit (Fixed Gear)

  • 21:00 – Mens Elite Thunder Crit (Fixed Gear)

To support our team of racers we’ll be organising a Fixed Beers ride from London to Eastbourne probably starting at BLB. Details to be confirmed.

Zuri Crit - Zurich, Switzerland

Fixed_Beers_Zuri_Crit.jpg

ZURICRIT is a fixed gear criterion. A normal road Criterium, as is common in road cycling, only with the twist that instead of normal road bikes track wheels (bikes without brakes, with only ONE rigid gear) come into application. A race format that has found tremendous popularity in the last 5 years worldwide.

Only in Switzerland has this spectacular racing format not yet established itself as in its neighboring countries, where in some cases official national championships are held in the discipline.

Brand NEW for 2019

As part of The Big Velo Fete at Herne Hill Velodrome (HHV), we’ve been invited to co-organise a one of a kind Fixed Gear Crit race with Fifth Floor .

UNIQUE FIXED CRIT COURSE

The course will include long straights, an uphill dead turn, 90° turns and long swooping hairpins, as well as a section which takes competitors onto the bank of the velodrome itself… going the wrong way!

Because the entire course will be within the velodrome track boundaries spectators will be able to look down onto it, giving the entire race a stadium feel. This means you will be able to sit and see the entire crit course in front of you. This means watching the action will be totally unlike all other existing crit races.

A map of the course will be released soon…

RACE DETAILS

What:
Track bike criterium using the banked velodrome, as well as technical sections using the existing junior track and MUGA tarmac in the track centre. 1200m course length. Come and be part of this unique opportunity and be amongst the first people to ever race a fixed gear criterium at HHV!

When:
Sunday 16th June, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Who:
Separate racing for men and women.

Depending on numbers we will most likely split into a Men's A and Men's B category. The organisers will select your category based upon your fixed gear crit experience. We will use our best judgment and our decision will be final, but the top 5 from the Men's B race will have a starting spot in the Men's A. As usual all competitors must be over 18.

Race Format:
Exact details are still TBC but due to the fact that this is part of a much larger event, we will most likely take a more relaxed approach to the race format with one straight race, with no primes, no starting grid and no timing chips. With the amount of other race disciplines that we have to fit in during the course of the day, expect race lengths to be in the region of 30 mins. All these things are reflected in the price of racing. This is just year 1 and our first fixed gear crit, so please bear with us and expect things to grow and grow in future iterations.

Prizes:
Due to the nature of the event being a fundraiser for the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome and the scale of the weekend's action, please note that prizes are likely to be token gifts, rather than anything big.

Equipment:
All standard fixed gear crit equipment rules apply:

  • Track bike (obviously)

  • Drop handlebars

  • No brakes

  • Lock ring

  • Clipless pedals and shoes

  • Cleats in good condition

  • Tyres clean and in good condition

  • Chain tensioned correctly (not too loose!)

  • All components in good working order

  • No lights, saddle bags, pumps, bells, horns, spokey dokeys or other trinkets

  • Helmet or bike camers are welcome but must be securely fastened. No body mounted cameras please. Definetly no selfie sticks.

Price:
Men & Women - £12

OTHER EVENTS

As well as the Fixed Gear Crit there will be huge number of other events and races happening throughout the weekend. Visit The Big Velo Fete webpage for more details.

PRICE

Entry to the Big Velofete is done on a donation basis and we ask for a donation of £3 for Adults, £1 for children, or £5 for a family. Please be advised that there is no parking on site throughout the weekend but we have plenty of bike parking available

NEW RACE FORMAT

The 2019 season will be divided into 3 different race types:

1) Men’s Championship Races
In 2019 the Men’s GC consists of 5 races. We believe by lowering the number of GC races
the battle for the GC will be more exciting. The format of these races will be: 3 qualifying
heats and 1 big final. So no more A & B races. Wait! What? That’s right: the best 16 riders of
each heat qualify for the final race. We expect the battle to be intense in both the heats and the
final

2) Women’s Championship Races
Just like the Men’s GC also the Women’s GC consists of 5 races. All these races are women
only races. So no more combined men and women races in 2019, which didn’t attract
enough female riders in recent years. It’s allowed though to compete in all Men’s races on
dates where there’s no Women’s GC race planned

3) Practice Races
In these races no points can be won for the GC. These races are mainly meant for practicing
race skills and tactics. And to gain the necessary race experience for those who are new to
fixed gear racing. Races will be divided into the good old A and B category. Basically it’s up
to the rider whether he will race the A or B race, although the final call is on the race
organization. There’s a good chance we will try out some different race formats at these
races

Hope it’s clear to you all. We are excited to get the 2019 season started. You can catch up
with us sooner than you think... Let the battle begin!

Thundercrit 4 London, UK

Fixed_Beers_Thundercrit.jpg

Quite possibly the best Fixed Gear Crit race in the UK. Created by the NLTCBMBC last year was epic, you can read all about what happened including all the pictures and videos in our write ups below…

“Flying the flag for the UK fixed gear cries. ThunderCrit London takes place at Lee Valley VeloPark, home of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The race has grown massively year on year with the help of a strong race community in the UK, across Europe and even further afield. Riders battle it out through qualification heats to reach the finals where they have the chance to go elbow to elbow to become ThunderCrit champion.

It's not all about the best athletes though, ThunderCrit offers the chance for fixed crit novices and rookies to get valuable race experience and to participate in a high quality event with a unique atmosphere supplied by the crowds and other racers.”
