Last October saw Fixed Beers take their first road trip. The plan, drive to Rotterdam for the RVLT music festival and meet up with two Fixed Beers riders who were competing in the WIE WILLEM 2 from Fixed Gear Den Haag.
We left London on Wednesday evening, jumping on the Dover ferry so we could drive through the night. Once in Dunkirk we quickly crossed the border and headed for a pitstop in Bruges where we wandered through city at about 2am. The city was beautiful even in the wet mist of the night. We even found a few bikes around the town to jump on.
From Bruges it was on to Rotterdam which we hit around 6am, tired and in need of sleep. Once recovered and refreshed we wandered out into the city in search of Fixed Gear bikes and a beer or two. It honestly took us more than a day to find a fixed gear bike. This quickly changed after we meet a member of the Rotterdam fixed gear group Fixed Beer Rotterdam in a bike shop. We introduced ourselves and heard about another group with a similar name: Fixedbier Bochum. So we decided next year to visit each other and connect the different groups
But we weren´t the only ones who made it from London to the paradise for cyclists. Two friends of ours – Torta and Roo – crossed the sea for a special event, WIE WILLEM 2 from Fixed Gear Den Haag.
While we explored the beautiful city Rotterdam and struggled sometimes with their roadinfrastructure with separated pavements, cycling lanes and roads Torta and Roo took their bikes and cycled, took the bus and the ferry to arrive just in time for the alleycat of Fixed Gear Den Haag were we came to cheer them on. It was a special experience to have a race in an unknown city, without orientation and in protected cycle lanes. But the other participants were great and so both of them found groups with which they could ride. While we still regret that we couldn´t bring our bikes we met wonderful people and had great conversations about riding fixed in different cities.
We are looking forward to new adventures in this year!
